STAR TREK: Dark Angel The So'koth Chronicles "Inherited Power"
A short story by Daniel Ratterree As an homage I guess you could say due to my interest in the Power Rangers TV show when I was growing up and because I had some friends that were into it too back in my Role Playing my character So’koth carried around a leather pouch with him which was tied around his neck which held a coin. I never said how he got the coin really only that it was inherited or given to him and that it really didn’t have the power it did back when it was made. I probably only used it once or twice in emergencies. Just enough to keep him alive in a bad spot. But here is the story of how So’koth came into possession of the White Ranger power coin. The Story of So’koth - “Inherited Power” Starfleet Academy – Year 4 - Survival Training: Planetary – Year: 2356 Location: Unknown Class M Planet

Day 1…
So’koth could still feel the fade of the transport effect on his body and the lessening of the sedation drugs they had used on him. His muscles were starting to twitch and he could hear the constant sound of rain. His cloths were wet and sticking to his body. He knew his survival training course had begun. They had taken him in the middle of the night, he had just managed to settle into bed for the night. He knew they would be coming for him eventually as the others in his class had slowly started to disappear one after the other. It was part of the fun, or so he was told. The not knowing. He hated not being prepared. But that was half the point of this exercise as you never know when things would go wrong and you’d have to rely on your training to live on.
“So’koth you alright!” he heard the familiar voice calling to him, he still had the black cloth over his eyes and the grogginess of the sedative was wearing off slowly.
“Yeah I’m here Luke!” he waved his hand and slowly found his way to gripping the black cloth. He pulled it off and blinked his eyes as they adjusted to the sudden change of light, there was a steady downpour of rain and the occasional sound of thunder in the distance. “What a great place they dropped us in!”
“Yeah, tell me about it.” His buddy Luke was slowly walking over toward him carrying a back pack. “They didn’t leave us with much!” he said offering the pack to So’koth.
“Remember it is random what they pack for you, and the world you’re put on is random!” So’koth said slowly rising. “We will have to take stock of what we do have later, right now we should try and find shelter!”
“Yeah, this rain is likely to get worse!” Luke said looking up at the sky through the tree canopy above. “Much worse I wager!”
“Let’s go that way!” So’koth said pointing toward what looked like a hill. “Might be able to find a cave or something!” he started toward the hill which was suddenly silhouetted by a bright flash of lighting in the distance.
“Yeah, we need to at least get under something with more absorption than these thin trees and they start to thicken up that way. Better chance of avoiding a strike!” his companion said as he came in line behind him as they charged through the woods.
The wind began to howl and pick up in intensity as they ran along. So’koth spotted a nook in the hillside which wasn’t really a cave but it was better than nothing. It was small but it would have to work. “Come on!” he yelled pointing at the hole. He jumped into the hole and waited till his friend jumped in right next to him with just enough room to turn around. They could see the wind kicking up as it bent and flexed the trees where they had just run through and it was coming right for them. “The packs!” So’koth yelled over the howling wind. He stuffed his in the opening with the straps out and zippers in.
Luke slammed his into place next to his and suddenly it was much quieter, and no more rain only the sound of their breathing in the darkness. “That was close!”
“Yeah,” So’koth said as he unzipped a pocket on the side of the pack, he could feel the pressure as the wind pushed on the packs, they were in there tight but they would have to be careful. “Watch your eyes!” he said as he fumbled for a glow stick in the pocket and cracked the thing which illuminated the hole they were in. He blinked allowing his eyes to adjust. “This is cozy!” he said as he shifted a little.
“You are not kidding!” he saw Luke looking around. “Maybe we can make this a little bigger?” he said as he eyed the dirt behind them and above them.
“Where we going to put the dirt?” So’koth said as he too surveyed the situation.
“Pop a hole through one of the packs and push it through?” he said looking at his friend. “We could use one of the side pockets maybe!”
“Do it. I’ll start on my side.” He pulled a metal handle from a small pocket in the pack and hit a button causing the trowel head to flip out and form. He started to slowly dig away at the dry dirt behind him causing it to fall on him. Slowly he pushed more and more dirt down into his lap. He could hear the tearing of fabric and the sudden increase in wind.
“Got it!” Luke said having popped a hole in the small pocket. “Let’s hope this works!” he reached down into So’koths lap and started gathering up the dirt falling there, and stuffing it through the hole in the pocket.
